Sachin Tendulkar congratulates Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal after presenting her with a BMW car in Hyderabad.

Saina Nehwal on Sunday received a brand new BMW car for winning a bronze medal at the London Olympics from none other than batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who said that the world is yet to see the best of the star shuttler.

The felicitation function was organised by vice president of Andhra Badminton Association Chamundeshwari Nath, who honoured the city girl by buying her the luxurious car.

"I am sure that she (Saina) is happy but not satisfied. We are also not satisfied because we know that you can go to greater heights. You have that ability with Gopi's guidance. There are better days ahead and as a sportsperson, you always try to believe that your best is yet to come," the iconic Indian batsman said at the felicitation function.

While announcing a BMW car for Saina and a car each for her coach P Gopichand and budding talent PV Sindhu, Sachin said, "I am quite confident that your best is yet to come and you will emerge victorious across the world and that is what we want".

Heaping praises on Saina, Tendulkar said, "Whatever I have seen of her there is no drama involved, it's just quality badminton and that is what you expect from a sportsperson. After winning (bronze medal) also, she has not got carried away and that's the beauty of being a champion sport person".

Saina gave India its first-ever medal in badminton at Olympics when her Chinese opponent withdrew from the bronze medal play-off after injuring her knee.

"This medal means a lot for India, I am sure this medal has not come without dedication, hard work, focus and having a vision," Tendulkar said.

Congratulating all the medal winners, he said it was "terrific" for India at London. "You all deserve praise and good things that are coming your way," he added.

Responding to the accolade, Saina said she had waited for her Olympic moment since her childhood days.

"I dreamt of being a Olympic champion at the age of 9...It is unbelievable to have won the medal. I am so happy. I should thank Gopi sir for making it possible. He really worked hard with me for many years.

"Myself winning the first medal will really change a lot of things for badminton in India and I am sure we shall have lot more medals in future. I hope badminton becomes one of the most popular games, though may not be like cricket, in our country," Saina said

Dream Akhi congratulates Googles doodle India Winner "Varsha Gupta"

Keeping with the tradition of celebrating landmark occasions, the search engine giant has yet another doodle on its homepage today.

Today's Google homepage greets you with a colourful doodle of a bunch of musical instruments.

The doodle celebrating Children's Day is the brainchild of Varsha Gupta, a Class Three student of Ryan International School in Greater Noida.

Gupta was recently chosen as winner of the Doodle 4 Google competition that Google organised.

The search engine had announced that it would put the winning entry on its India homepage on Children's Day -- November 14.

On the Google 4 Doodle site Gupta explains her creation in these words:

"India is a land of different cultures. In India Music plays a very important role. India has given many musical instruments to the world. Example:  Tabla, Sarod, Veena, Shehnai etc.

Goddess Saraswati plays Veena, God Shiv plays damaru. According to our mythological stories musical instruments used to be played on all the occasions.

Even during war musical instruments were played. Lord Krishna's flute is known in the whole world for its magical music. In modern days Zakir Hussain is world famous as Tabla Mastro. Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma is known as a great Santoor player all over the world."

The theme of the competition was India's gift to the world and was open to students from Class 1 to Class 10 with the winner walking hope with a laptop, Internet connection for a year and a technology grant of Rs 2,00,000 for his/her school.

From over 1,55,000 entries 6000 doodles were longlisted following which faculty from the Sir JJ School of Arts shortlisted 600 doodles that made it to the semifinal round.

A panel of judges including artist Ganga Kadakia, actress Nandita Das and adman Prasoon Joshi picked the 45 finalists while Jennifer Hom, from Google's doodle team, chose the winning doodle.

Dhoni, Raina star in India's big win   

An elusive Indian dream became a reality at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here on Friday night. Since the tie in a World Cup match at Bangalore in February, M.S. Dhoni's men have found in England, an impregnable rival. The ghosts of the immediate past were finally laid to rest at least for now as India defeated England by 126 runs in the opening One-Day International to go 1-0 up in the five-match series. Chasing India's 300 for seven in 50 overs, England mustered 174 in 36.1 overs.

The force-multipliers in the England top-order — Craig Kieswetter and Kevin Pietersen — were gone within the first 10 overs. Kieswetter nibbled outside the off-stump against Praveen Kumar and Pietersen, failing to get into his stride on a two-paced pitch, failed to beat R. Ashwin's throw.

Much hinged on skipper Alastair Cook (60) and Jonathan Trott (26), and the two cemented a 71-run third-wicket partnership. Cook fell while trying to force the pace against Ravindra Jadeja and the England innings lapsed into a free-fall as the last eight wickets fell for the addition of a mere 63 runs. Trott launched into an ugly cross-batted swipe against Jadeja; Ravi Bopara and Jonathan Bairstow enriched the follow-through of R. Ashwin and Jadeja respectively and stumps were repeatedly disturbed as Umesh Yadav's deliveries stayed fast and low to trigger celebrations in the stands.
Lead roles

The Indian innings changed its traits of ‘slow-and-steady' to ‘quick-and-forceful' over the course of Friday evening while Man-of-the-Match M.S. Dhoni (87 n.o.) and Suresh Raina (61) played their lead roles to good effect.

The portents of change for the Indian skipper were evident when his wretched run with the toss thankfully ended in the afternoon.

Dhoni immediately opted to bat and watched openers Parthiv Patel and Ajinkya Rahane remain guarded against Tim Bresnan and Steven Finn. A quiet phase ensued while the fans slowly trickled in and the official broadcaster briefly lost connectivity and those outside the venue and in the rest of India, wondered about the plight of the match.
Reprieve

Rahane enjoyed a reprieve when Jonathan Trott dropped him at slip off Finn. The opener was yet to open his account but he failed to capitalise and his timing remained awry on a turgid track. Rahane inadvertently also caused Parthiv's exit shortly after his partner exuded confidence with an on-driven four off Bresnan. Parthiv backed up too far when Rahane drove Finn and the ball ricocheted off the seamer's palms and crashed into the non-striker's stumps. Parthiv was left stranded and a circumspect Rahane failed to get into his stride and fatally charged at Graeme Swann while Kieswetter whipped the bails.

Gautam Gambhir, who stepped in following Parthiv's dismissal, was quick to smash boundaries through a packed off-side though the step-and-slam routine led to a few leading edges that gave false hope to the fielders. The southpaw was a tad unlucky to be adjudged leg-before while Jade Dernbach's delivery seemed to be marginally missing leg-stump.

But, Billy Bowden raised the finger and at 79 for three with the bowling Power Play in progress, Virat Kohli and Raina had to consolidate rather than play their shots. Alastair Cook plugged point with two men and also beefed up the short mid-wicket cordon while Kohli failed to drill his strokes.

Yet Kohli and Raina (61, 55b, 5x4, 2x6) through their industrious ways added 44 runs for the fourth wicket before a piece of fielding brilliance snuffed out the alliance. Kohli, with his patience wearing thin, employed the inside-out lofted stroke against Samit Patel.

The ball was seemingly sailing over long-off when Kevin Pietersen timed his leap to perfection and cupped the ball.

Raina then allied with his skipper in a 72-run fifth-wicket partnership off 61 balls and India began its march towards a respectable total.

Raina picked his spots down the ground, taking the ball on the full and whacking it hard, but his best shot was the heft down fine-leg as Dernbach peddled a full-toss. Cook tried to rein in Dhoni's singles down the ground as the long-off fielder was brought to mid-off but the Indian captain found his way and during the batting Power Play (overs 36-40), he dug out Bresnan's yorkers and flat-batted the seamer as well as Finn.

Raina then plonked his front foot and hit through the line for mighty sixes against Bresnan and Finn. India was up and running as the batting Power Play yielded 59 runs, a statistic that was slightly marred by Raina's edged hoick against Finn.

Dhoni muscled ahead and egged Ravindra Jadeja on in a 65-run sixth-wicket partnership. Jadeja scattered Samit twice across the skies and India scored 91 runs in the last 10 overs to make England stare at an imposing target with Dhoni's helicopter shot against Finn being the pick of his meaty blows.

Later in the night, the Indian skipper snatched a stump as a cherished souvenir after the string of defeats finally ground to a halt.

India-US Education Summit A 'Very Big Deal'

 Washington:Describing the first Indo-U.S. Higher Education Summit being held here Thursday as "a very big deal", a U.S. official called it part of a continuing efforts to increase academic exchanges.

"Well, this education summit is a very big deal," State Department spokesman Victoria Nuland told reporters Tuesday ahead of the summit co-chaired by India's Minister of Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at Georgetown University. "This goes to our continuing effort to increase student-student exchanges; Americans living, learning, and working in India; Indians living, learning, and working here," she said.

Sibal arrived here Tuesday to participate in the summit which will be attended by higher education leaders and government officials from the U.S. and India, as well as private sector leaders.

The objective of the summit is to further strengthen higher education collaboration and exchange between institutions in the United States and India through exploration of topics of mutual interest such as joint degrees, research partnerships, accreditation and quality assurance, officials said.

In addition, the summit will highlight the importance of education as a pillar of the U.S.-India Strategic Dialogue and set forth goals for deepening this aspect of our bilateral relationship in cooperation with the many excellent institutions of higher education in both countries.

The summit will feature a roundtable discussion on U.S.-India Higher Education Cooperation, co-chaired by senior officials from the U.S. and Indian governments.

Prominent higher education and thought leaders will speak at a plenary session and in breakout sessions on topics crucial to expanding and strengthening higher education collaboration between the two countries.

PSLV-C18 to put four satellites in orbit

It will be launched from Sriharikota on October 12; two satellites built by students Preparations are on for the lift-off of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C18) from the spaceport at Sriharikota at 11 a.m. on October 12. Global tropical weather The rocket will put four satellites in the orbit: Megha-Tropiques, built by India and France to understand global tropical weather and climate; SRM Sat, built by the students of SRM University, near Chennai; Jugnu, a satellite integrated by students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur; and VesselSat from Luxembourg. The information sent by the instruments on board the Megha-Tropiques will help understand the behaviour of Indian monsoons and occurrence of cyclones, floods and droughts. Heat shield The PSLV has been fully integrated, said K. Radhakrishnan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), on Tuesday from Bangalore. “The Megha-Tropiques and the three co-passenger satellites have been fully integrated with the vehicle. The heat-shield was closed last morning.” The heat-shield around the satellites protects them from the intense heat during the launch and the vehicle's ascent into the atmosphere. After the rocket reaches a certain altitude, the heat-shield falls off. Dr. Radhakrishnan said the final checks were under way. “On October 8, we will have a launch rehearsal. The vehicle readiness review will take place on October 9 followed by the Launch Authorisation Board meeting the same day itself. As of now, the launch is scheduled on October 12 at 11 a.m.” The PSLV-C18 — which will be the 20th PSLV to be launched — is the core-alone version of the four-stage PSLV, without the strap-on booster motors that will put the four satellites in orbit. Megha-Tropiques (Megha in Sanskrit means cloud and Tropiques in French is tropics) is one of the most advanced and complex satellites built to monitor the weather in the short-term and climate in the long-term in the tropical regions of the world. It is a joint project of ISRO and the French space agency, Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). Thermal engine ISRO officials said the 1,000-kg satellite had been built to investigate the tropical regions which received the maximum energy from the sun than they radiated back into space. The excess energy received in the tropical region is used as a thermal engine and provides circulation in the atmosphere and the oceans. ‘Life cycle' “The complex processes between solar radiation, water vapour, clouds, humidity, precipitation and atmospheric motion determine the life-cycle of convective systems and influence the Indian monsoon in the tropical region,” the ISRO officials explained. From its perch in the sky at an altitude of 867 km, the Megha-Tropiques would help study, on a sustained basis, the rapidly developing weather systems in the entire tropical world. Thus, the information beamed by the Megha-Tropiques will be useful not only to India but to all the countries in the Indian Ocean region and other parts of the world. Scientific payloads The satellite has four scientific payloads. The Microwave Analysis and Detection of Rain and Atmospheric Structures (MADRAS), built by ISRO and the CNES, will provide an estimation of rainfall, water vapour, liquid water, ice and surface wind. Scanner for Radiative Budget (SCARAB) will study the radiation received by the earth and reflected by it. The third instrument, Sondeur Atmospherique du Profil d'humidite Intertropicale par Radiometrie (SAPHIR) will investigate the humidity present in the tropical atmosphere. The CNES has built the SCARAB and the SAPHIR. The GPS-ROS (Global Positioning System- Radio Occultation System) from Italy will study the temperature and humidity at different altitudes.

Sony Corp. President and Chief Executive Howard Stringer described Steve Jobs as the “leading light” in the digital age.

Few companies have felt Apple’s rise more so than Japan’s Sony, whose iconic Walkman transformed the music listening experience in the 1980s. But it was slow to embrace the shift to digital downloads.

The Walkman was no match for Apple’s iPod when it launched in 2001.

But Mr. Jobs himself was deeply influenced by Sony and Japan. He counted Sony founder Akio Morita as one of his mentors and was said to have been inspired by the Walkman. “The digital age has lost its leading light, but Steve’s innovation and creativity will inspire dreamers and thinkers for generations,” Mr. Stringer said in a one-sentence statement.

Person of great vision: Acer

Taiwan’s Acer Inc., a leading PC vendor, calls Steve Jobs a “person of great vision, innovation and leadership” as it remembered the late Apple founder’s “huge influence” on the industry.

In a Thursday statement, Acer said Mr. Jobs’ death “is a great loss to Apple as well as the industry.”

Acer was once the world’s No. 3 PC vendor, but the advent of Apple’s iPads cut into PC sales and forced Acer to change directions to meet the challenge early this year.

Mr. Jobs’ death did not have an immediate impact on Hon Hai Industry Precision Co., a key producer of iPhones and iPads. Its share prices rose about 2 percent early Thursday on expectations that recent Apple price cuts will bolster the Taiwanese company’s revenues.

Innovative spirit: Samsung

Samsung is calling rival Steve Jobs an “innovative spirit” who will be remembered forever.

Samsung said Thursday that Mr. Jobs “introduced numerous revolutionary changes to the information technology industry.”

The announcement of Mr., Jobs’ death came a day after Samsung said it would file court injunctions in France and Italy seeking to block the sale of Apple’s latest iPhone. The smartphone giants are locked in an intensifying patent fight.

Samsung says Mr. Jobs’ “innovative spirit and remarkable accomplishments will forever be remembered by people around the world.”

The companies have been at odds since April when Apple took legal actions claiming Samsung’s Galaxy line of smartphones and tablet computers copy the iPhone and iPad.
